(If you are a SILVER member, you may use this info for research, but please double check the agents’ website to see if they are open to general submissions and follow their guidelines.)

Please read BOTH and then decide who would be the best fit for your work.

12 x 12 Featured Agent Sean McCarthy

Sean McCarthy – Sean McCarthy Literary Agency

A little bit about Sean:

Sean McCarthy began his publishing career as an editorial intern at Overlook Press and then moved over to the Sheldon Fogelman Agency.  He worked as the submissions coordinator and permissions manager before becoming a full-time literary agent.  Sean graduated from Macalester College with a degree in English-Creative Writing, and is grateful that he no longer has to spend his winters in Minnesota.

In 2013, Sean McCarthy established Sean McCarthy Literary which emphasizes a comprehensive approach in assisting clients with their literary careers.  The agency guides authors and illustrators through all phases of the publishing process, from developing manuscripts to negotiating contracts to managing foreign and subsidiary rights and everything in between.

He is drawn to flawed, multifaceted characters with devastatingly concise writing in YA, and smartly paced mysteries or adventures in MG. In picture books, he looks more for unforgettable characters, off-beat humor, and especially clever endings. He is not currently interested in issue-driven stories or query letters that pose too many questions.”

Here is what Sean had to say when asked what he is looking for in picture books today:

“I am always looking for character-driven picture books with unforgettable hooks and strong narrative voice. I know this sounds a little broad, but I’ve learned that my taste in picture books expands the longer I’ve been in publishing, and I really want picture books to surprise me. For non-fiction picture books, I like biographies of historical figures that should be more widely known, particularly if they are of a person of color or underrepresented group. I’m usually not the best match for quieter slice-of-life stories, and I am extremely selective when it comes to rhyme.”

Sean has been a 12 x 12 Featured Agent previously. You can find our previous posts here, here, here, and here. Here are a few additional resources:

Adriana Domínguez – Full Circle Literary

A little bit about Adriana

Adriana Domínguez has 20+ years of experience in publishing. Prior to becoming an agent, she was Executive Editor at HarperCollins Children’s Books, where she managed the children’s division of the Rayo imprint. Before that, she was Children’s Reviews Editor at Críticas magazine, published by Library Journal. Adriana has performed editorial work for both children and adult publishers. She is also a professional translator, a member of the Brooklyn Literary Council that organizes the Brooklyn Book Festival, and one of the founders of the Comadres and Compadres Writers Conference in New York City. Adriana is based in New York.”

When asked what she’s looking for in picture books, Adriana said:

“I am drawn to picture books with heart and don’t shy away from humor. However, I am not personally drawn to snark, it’s just not my thing. I represent both fiction and narrative nonfiction—I’ve had a measure of success with biographies and do love them, especially when they tackle figures that we all should know more about and do so in interesting ways. I am always looking for #ownvoices authors and author-illustrators.  POETREE, written by 12 x 12 graduate Shauna LaVoy Reynolds is a perfect example of the type of picture book that I’d love to see more of; one that makes me think: ‘HOW didn’t ANYONE ever think of this before?!'”

Adriana has been a 12 x 12 Featured Agent previously. Please find our past profiles here and here. Below are a few more resources for Adriana:
