Do You Want to Write 12 Picture Books in 12 Months? | Learn More!

12 x 12 February 2021 Check-In!

Hello, hello! Welcome to the last day of February AND the final day of registration for 12 x 12! It’s hard to believe, but we’re already two months into the year. I’m so happy and grateful you all decided to take this journey with me this year. I never take the community for granted, and I am loving the liveliness, support, and enthusiasm coming from everyone.

Full disclosure: I did not write a new draft in Feb. HOWEVER, I did some major revising on multiple manuscripts and I organized all my research for a new PB bio I’m working on. So I am happy with my progress.

Tell us YOUR progress. Did you complete a draft and/or revision in February? Let us know in the Rafflecopter and in the comments. February Featured Author Lisa Katzenberger is offering a picture book manuscript critique (up to 1,000 words) to one 12 x 12 lucky member.

Thanks, Lisa!

  1. I wrote about 3/4 of a new draft, which is significant progress for me! I also regained entry to my hacked Twitter account and started trying to repair what I could (lost 10 years of past tweets and access to who I had been following). Am thankful to be on a good path again and thankful to finally be part of the 12X12 community!

  2. I joined 12×12 for the first time again since 2013. I have started several new MS, revised one, and written one new one! Looking forward to all that is to come in 2021.

  3. I completed a new MS and worked on revisions for several others. Also participated in my first Twitter pitch party! Big step!

  4. I’ve drafted two new stories and revised three. Subbed two revised older ones today to publishers. Hosted two 12×12 critique group sessions as well as attending my regular group by Zoom.. Fortunate to be able to work 3-4 hours a day x 6 days a week on pbs with everything else set aside for 2021.

  5. This month saw me slowing down a bit as I was not only doing 12 x 12 but also NF FEST. However, I did manage to write a new draft of an old STORYSTORM idea and revise two STORYSTORM manuscripts

  6. February was a short month, but I stretched it to the max 🙂 I wrote a draft for February and revised. I went from STORYSTORM th NFFest 2021! Rolling into 2021!

  7. I’m brand spanking new to 12×12. I wrote a PB draft this month. It needs some work but I’m happy with my progress.

  8. Not only was I able to add a manuscript to 12×12, but I was also able to revise multiple times! I am very humbled by the support I am getting and hope I am giving in return!

  9. I’m new to 12×12 but this was a productive month for me. I wrote a new manuscript that came to me while editing some old ones. Hoping you guys can help me keep up this momentum 🙂

  10. I wrote a new draft for a story that is based on an unusual, funny and sweet historical event. I am excited about it because i have wanted to develop the idea for a long time. I spent more time on the 12×12 website trying to learn how to use the forums available. I hope to increase my productivity this next month and learn more about all you amazing people in this community!

  11. the Feb manuscript is lyrical non-fiction about an event in the universe that took 9 billion years to reach Earth and tell the story. It is inspired by a news post. I find it absolutely amazing. In addition, when I look at pictures provided by the Hubble telescope I feel that these kind of stories need to be told and stir the awe in children.

  12. I wrote a new picture book draft this past month, and am in the process of making some major revisions to the one I submitted last month (thank you, hive!). Things feel very busy right now, but I am not complaining!

  13. I was very good this month and wrote a new draft which I have actually did an extra write up hard trim so I could have it ready for Vivian’s 50word contest. And I also revised a story.

  14. I managed to finish a new draft that had been rolling round my head for a couple of weeks and that I’d start, stopped and started again until one day, the plot finally fell into place. I also managed a couple of revisions too, and got those stories ready for their next critique! There’s a lot going on outside of my writing, which is taking both physical and mental strength, so I am really pleased to have got any writing work done this month at all! Spring is definitely in the air too, which helped!

  15. Wrote a completely new draft and surprised myself. Haven’t been able to come up with much new in a while.

  16. Revised my January PB draft and wrote a new draft and now reworking an old manuscript! Interesting how different a story looks after putting it aside for a year. I have a different perspective on it and a much clearer vision for it!

  17. After spending last year completing my first YA novel, I returned to drafting PB’s. The same “rules” apply whether writing 70,000 words or 400–grab the reader’s attention and heart with tight, “alive” language; connect with readers right away; introduce a high-concept problem immediately; let the main character struggle over hurdles until the problem is solved, one way or another; add twists and turns to a theme that matters to children; revise, revise, revise and revise more to find the “magic.” So…I wrote a February draft, totally revised it, posted the revision, and stuck Sticky Notes on the printout for reference as I revise again and again. Now, it’s marinating in a folder among my files of other drafts/revisions. I’ll begin writing a draft for March and begin the process all over again. Somewhere along the way, I’ll lecture myself to heavily revise one of my filed stories for submission.

  18. Like Lisa, I have also fallen in love with some of my titles even though I haven’t yet started writing text. I guess that sometimes our darlings appear in the form of titles! Thanks for sharing your process, Lisa!

  19. I intended this year to be a year of mostly revising, but you can’t ignore a great idea for a new book. So, I wrote it up. Such a great webinar last week! Can’t wait to listen again. Thanks, Julie and Kelli, for all you do for us.

  20. I’m really thrilled to have done so much this month. I’m taking a course in revision which has helped immensely.

  21. Wrote a picture book this month, which has been whirring around in my head for a while. Happy to get it down, but definitely needs a lot of work editing. I’m struggling with endings at the moment. Frustrating. Hopefully I find my groove again soon.

  22. February has flown by as I was busy writing two new drafts and revising another one. I hope that March is as productive!

  23. Feb flew by!

    Good Luck!

  24. I wrote two new drafts this month, and edited three.
I went to the SCBWI Winter Conference, and prepared an entry for PBParty, which I just submitted. I attended three critique sessions.
I did try posting a query letter on the feedback session, but I had twenty views and no comments, which left me a little puzzled–I think everyone was getting ready for PBPItch with just an hour left, and I was, too–way too last minute.
I hope the query was alright!

So happy to be part of the 12×12 community!

  25. I have one of Lisa’s books sitting on my desk right now and loved it! Excited to be entered in the drawing for a PB ms critique from her for one of my new manuscripts. Thanks!

  26. I completed both a new WIP and a revision of an old one this month. Thanks to 12×12 for the helpful push on creativity!

  27. I wrote a draft for February that I absolutely LOVE. I can’t wait to dive into revisions and see what develops!
