Do You Want to Write 12 Picture Books in 12 Months? | Learn More!

12 x 12 August 2018 Check-In!

It looks like 2018 is going to be a revision-themed year for me, rather than a drafting one. I’m bummed I didn’t get a new draft written in August, but I’m happy I got a TON of writing done overall, including sending a new (to her) manuscript to my agent and completing one additional revision to get it closer to submission-ready. I also revised my PB bio for the umpteenth time to send for critique at the Writing Barn intensive I’m attending in September. Lastly, I’ve had loads of ideas come to me, so eventually one will call me name and beg to be written. All in all, not a bad month.

How about you?

Tell us your progress. Did you complete a draft and/or revision in August? Let us know in the Rafflecopter and in the comments. One lucky winner will receive a picture book manuscript critique from this month’s Featured Author Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow.

How cool is that? Thank you, Jamilah!

Here is what you need to do to check in for a chance to win:

  1. See the Rafflecopter widget at the end of this post that says “A Critique from Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow at the top.
  2. Click on the “Comment on Jamilah’s post” button. Commenting on Jamilah’s post is mandatory for this giveaway and you can enter the Rafflecopter even if you didn’t write a draft this month. You can comment on the post here.  Click ENTER.
  3. Click on the “Wrote a PB Draft” button. This will ask if you completed a PB draft in August. If you did, click ENTER, if not, move on to the next step.
  4. Click on the last “Revised a PB Draft” button. This will ask if you revised a PB in August. If you did, click ENTER. If not, move on to the next step.
  5. That’s it! Rafflecopter will track your points.

Since we’re heading into a long weekend in the U.S., we’re giving you a little extra time to get your check-in complete. You have until midnight Eastern on September 4th to enter your results. Rafflecopter will draw a winner and it will be announced on the blog on September 5th.

You do not need to post your manuscript and/or revisions on the forum for them to count. If you wrote or revised a manuscript in August, even if it’s scribbled on a napkin in your car, then enter the Rafflecopter below.

(Remember, monthly draft and revision badges are awarded separately from your Rafflecopter entry. Watch this handy tutorial to find out how to get your badges. CLICK HERE.)

  1. August scooted out of here too soon! I managed to write a draft and revise a couple of stories. Never enough time! Happy Labor Day everyone 🙂

  2. A busy month – managed to do a first draft of a story that’s been mulling around in my head for a few months. Plus, I revised three manuscripts following critiques, and I think two are submission ready as a result!

  3. What, it’s September?!? Looking back, I’ve written a lot of new stories–yeah! But as Fall approaches, I want to ween out the weak and polish up 2 really strong ones so that by year’s end, I’ve 2 more ready to go on submission. Hope everyone enjoys the last days of summer!

  4. This is something I haven’t read much about. How do authors deal with their fears of marketing, reading, public appearances?

Thanks for sharing those fears and ways of dealing with them. Great advice.

  5. A critique from Jamilah would be amazing!

I managed to get out a new draft, and revise a couple pb manuscripts, as well as some revision on my verse novel through a mentorship with KidLit College. I’m also working on a new illustration sample for a pb, getting it ready for submission.

Looking forward to the fall! I love fall. It’s my favorite season!
    Happy writing all!

  6. Revised an older manuscript for the umpteenth time, based on some great comments from an agent who rejected manuscript, but who had some helpful suggestions. Also, based on an “away” vacation that allowed me to clear my mind, wrote a rough draft of what I hope will become a lyrical piece.

  7. I submitted a picture book to couple of agents/editors and revised several stories. Also had a great editor critique and looking forward to another!

  8. No new drafts completed, but I managed a number of revisions and started to outline a few new stories. Hoping to complete one of the new outlines for my September story!

  9. Well, we’re headed towards Fall and kids will all be heading back to school. Where did summer go? I added another rough draft from my list of Storystorm ideas. I also revised another picture book that I wrote for this year’s NaPiBoWriWee. I revised 2 more chapters of Anya, and another 2 chapters of Ned, my middle grade novel.

  10. Thank you Jamilah for taking the time to write your wonderful post and great points on sensory writing. And, congratulations on your new book.

  11. Thanks Jamilah for giving me another lyrical perspective to draw from. I look forward to reading your new book and Congratulations on getting it published. I know how much work it is in finding the right words to move the plot of the story while creating great characters. It would be wonderful to win a critique from you. This month I’ve done more revisions but didn’t write any new manuscripts. I could use your help. Sincerely, Bev
